Shalom is a home in La Ceiba for at-risk-girls. The home was started by Eleanor Cooper the National Director for Cruzada del Evangelio de Honduras as a place where young girls who are at risk of sexual assalt or abduction, because of their home or village environment, can come to live and study in a safe haven. The girls live at the home in a dormitory setting with a house mother and attend nearby schools, Most girls come to the home around 12 years old and remain until they finish school, marry or decide they want to live on their own after their 18th birthday. Many of these girls are sponsored by members of AHMEN. We've been sponsoring Fanny for the past four years. She's 18 and in the 9th grade. Like many of the girls Fanny's education prior to coming to Shalom had been sporadic due to having to work rather than study. She's made remarkable progress, is taking accelerated courses and plans to attend college when she finishes high school. In partnership with a couple from Alabama, we are also helping Magdalena, a Shalom graduate who is 20 years old is now in her 4th year of medical school. Our daughter Carly and her husband Tim are helping Magdalena's sister Maribel, who is 22 years old and still lives at the Shalom Home, to attend a university where she is studying graphic design.
