We have been led to help the only public school on Utila. As you can see in the pictures below, it's in very poor condition. There are close to 483 students between kindergarten and high school, plus a night adult school. The school is so small there is no room for all the students to attend at the same time. So kindergarten through 6th grade attend in the mornings, 7th, 8th and 9th grades attend in the afternoons, and in the evenings, 10th through 12th grades plus the adult school.
We have been helping them acquiring supplies, but there is so much more to do. They get very little support from the national government and the recent political upheavals have made a bad situation worse.
One of the few bright spots about the school is the fact that Bible reading and prayer is allowed, as it is in all public schools in Honduras. Every class and meeting begins with prayer!
